AIA-NC Headquarters Competition
We approached this design intending to create a civic building that incorporates a dynamic form but integrates comfortably within its context. We developed a building that acts as mediator between the state government sector, the university, and the newly revitalized residential areas. On the South side of the building, the upper pavilion and lower plaza create outdoor gathering spaces, making up for the sites deficit of available green space. The goal of the South side lawn is to establish a flexible plaza for events and lectures. We also hope that this area will blend the Blount Street Revitalization Plan with our site, creating a community area. An entrance near the plaza fountain is a welcoming area for groups and students. The North side is a graceful extension of the pedestrian streetscape and offers access to public transportation. The West side of the building houses the main entrance to the building. This entrance is shaped to reflect its role; an anchor and a gateway to the governmental quad. The east side responds to the adjacent smaller scale offices and parking. Daylighting systems on the building play a dominant role in the articulation of the façades. Rainwater collection, glazing and shading systems are an aesthetic advantage and a means for architectural expression. Using a rich palette of materials and forms, the design articulates programmatic elements, allowing for many opportunities to introduce varied forms into a balanced composition.
